Things I learnt from The Alchemist

“The problem is that they don’t even realize that they’re walking a new road every day. They don’t even see that the fields are new and the seasons change. All they think about is food and water.”

This paragraph refers to the boy bringing his sheep around, always looking for a new road to travel. Break from normal routine. We are at times too engrossed like the sheep, too busy putting food on table and forget to enjoy the journey. This is a reminder to myself that I need to enjoy the process and this path.

“It’s this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what’s happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That’s the world’s greatest lie.”

At certain point in life, we will be swamped with things which keep us busy with life. Sometimes, we are overwhelmed by work, family, friends, status and relationship. We feel that we are losing control and we do not have any control in life. We go with the drift, lose our vision and end goals. We always have the choice to decide that we are in control of our lives.

“At that point in their lives, everything is clear and everything is possible. They are not afraid to dream, and to year for everything they would like to see happen to them in their lives. But, as time passes, a mysterious force begins to convince them that it will be impossible for them to realize their Personal Legend.”

When we are young, we are not afraid to dream. Everything is possible. As we age, we lose our ability to dream. We forget our dream or how to dream. I am forgetting how to dream. Maybe I want to stay in each Asean countries for a month when I am in my late fifties. Maybe I will stay half a year in HK and another in SG, looking after both side of parents when they need us more a few years later down the road.

We lose our motivation along the way. I seem to lose my motivation easily, I lack perseverance and grit. I tend to give up easily. I know about this weakness and I am still working on this.

“Whoever you are, or whatever it is that you do, when you really want something, it’s because that desire originated in the soul of the universe. It’s your mission on earth.” “And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

When you truly want or desire something, all the forces in the universe will align to help you achieve it. This is similar to the law of attraction. You are what you think and what you think will attract the desired results. I have always use this projection of desire to achieve things in life. Maybe this is equivalent to the self-fulfilling prophecy.

“Because you are trying to realize your Personal Legend. And you are at the point where you’re about to give it all up.” The miner was about to give it all up, right at the point when, if he were to examine just one more stone – just one more – he would find his emerald. The miner picked up a stone and threw it aside. The stone fell upon and there, embedded in the broken stone was the most beautiful emerald.”

The Personal Legend in the book refers to your destiny, your purpose or end goal. I give up too easily. I have nothing to share for the above. All I learn is never give up, you won’t know whether the next attempt will bring you the desired success.

“When each day is the same as the next, it’s because people fail to recognize the good thing that happen in their lives every day that the sun rises.

Everyday presents itself a new opportunity. Learn something new every single day. Recently, I learn about new functions in Excel which helps me with my personal finance spreadsheet. I try to read and learn from a book every day while commuting.

A language the boy had used throughout the time that he was trying to improve things at the shop. It was the language of enthusiasm, of things accomplished with love and purpose, and as part of a search for something believed in and desired.

When you are pursuing something which you have strong desire, you will naturally be filled with lots of energy and enthusiasm. Nothing more to add, maybe I have lost my energy and enthusiasm.

On the other hand, I don’t know if the desert can be a friend, and it’s in the desert that I have to search for my treasure. If I don’t find it, I can always go home. I finally have enough money, and all the time I need. Why not?

I will think I can give my best shot at this business. Even if I fail, I can always go back to find another job or join the gig economy. Why not? Think of possibilities and opportunities.

Because I don’t live in either my past or my future. I’m interested only in the present, you will be a happy man. Life will be a party for you, a grand festival, because life is the moment we’re living right now.

I need to remind myself not to live in the glory of the past. The good old days of high paying jobs are over, they are done and dusted. I do not know what my future will present. I only have today to chase for the next deal, to close it, to secure my next commission. Today is the moment to live my life. Today is the time I spend with my family.

The closer he got to the realization of his dream, the more difficult things became.

With all things in life, when you are getting closer to achieving your dream, things will naturally become more challenging and difficult.

“During the second year, you will remember about the treasure. The omens will begin insistently to speak of it, and you’ll try to ignore them…..Because what kept you at the oasis was your own fear that you might never come back. At that point, the omens will tell you that the treasure is buried forever. Then sometimes during the fourth year, the omens will abandon you, because you’ve stopped listening to them. You will spend the rest of your days knowing that you didn’t pursue your Personal Legend, and that now it is too late. When the boy decided to pursue his Personal Legend, he immediately felt peace in his heart.

In the book, the Alchemist explained to the boy what will happen if he drops his quest to pursue his purpose in life. Our gut or instinct or inner voice will remind us for a while, eventually it will stop because we stop listening to it. Only when you listen to your inner voice and follow it, you will achieve inner peace. Learn to listen to your inner voice.

The last I heard this inner voice was in 2018 when I was talking to a friend from Finexis. My inner voice told me to join him and he will guide me in the business. I did not listen to my inner voice as I was engulfed with fear.

There is only one way to learn. It is through action. Everything you need to know you have learned through your journey.

There is no other way to learn than taking actions. You can read all the investment books and attend all the seminars but if you have not buy your first shares, you will not understand the pain of losing and joy of winning. It is all about taking massive actions.

Listen to your heart. It knows all things, because it came from the Soul of the World, and it will one day return there. “Why do we have to listen to our hearts?”the boy asked. “Because, wherever your heart is, that is where you’ll find your treasure.” The alchemist explained, “Naturally your heart is afraid that, in pursuing your dream, you might lose everything you have won.” People are afraid to pursue their most important dreams, because they feel that they don’t deserve them, or that they’ll be unable to achieve them. We, their hearts, become fearful just thinking of loved ones who go away forever, or of moments that could have been good but weren’t, or of treasures that might have been found but were forever hidden in the sands. Because, when these things happen, we suffer terribly. Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of search is a second’s encounter with God and with eternity. From then on, the boy understood his heart. He asked it, please, never to stop speaking to him. He asked that, when he wandered far from his dreams, his heart press him and sound the alarm. The boy swore that, every time he heard the alarm, he would heeds its message.

Please, my inner voice, continue to talk to me. I apologize if I always ignore you. I did listen to you when I first met my wife. Guide me for the rest of my remaining days, lead me to fields of glory in pursuit of my personal freedom, making the best use of time, talent and skill in this world.
